Sober Spring: 4 Ways to Reset Your Life Without a Drop of Regret
When spring hits and the sun comes out there’s one place in the UK you know is guaranteed to be heaving… The humble beer garden. It doesn’t need to be fancy, we’re easily pleased. As long as we have a few mates with us and a cold one in hand? We’re happy. That is, until the cold one becomes a cold ten… Then we spend the entire next day locked indoors hungover to sh!t. And, rather than making the most of the weather, we increase our time spent indoors dealing with shame spirals, cancelling plans and realising we spent our budget for the month in one night. Sound familiar?
The days get longer and in theory, we have more time to be outdoors and/or spending more time doing the things we love – without feeling the need to hibernate inside with a blanket. But what do we do instead? Drink too much and end up hibernating under a blanket – again.
Here you’ll find tips for making the most of the new season. So why not try something different this year? This is your chance to take the rest of the year into your hands and vow not to waste another minute of it hungover. 1. Spring Clean: Inside & Out
I’m not just talking pulling the furniture out & getting that dust you know is building up there. Or, reorganising your entire wardrobe Marie Kondo style. Taking care of your space is a show of self-respect. And there’s something SO satisfying about admiring your work when it’s done. But, it’s not just cleaning your external space, it’s letting go of everything that has been holding you back. Alcohol fogs your clarity, famously steals tomorrow’s happiness, ruins our routines & can make us all round unproductive. So take this opportunity to:
- Do something you’ve been putting off either for yourself, or around your home.
- Clear your head – a walk in nature, trying meditation or making a commitment to a period of time alcohol free
- Tackle a space that makes your soul sag every time you see it – start small!

2. Replace The Pints, With Purpose
If you’re committing to a period of time alcohol free, then the best way to maximise that time is to set some goals to achieve during your spell of sobriety. One of the main reasons people hate dry months, is because they change nothing during that time. They remove alcohol and that’s it. The key is to remove alcohol and add in things that make you really happy. (Actually happy – not just pretend happy for a few hours down the pub, then sad for the next 72).
This can look however you want it to. So if you missed your New Year’s resolutions, or have not been much of a goal setter in the past. This is your chance to change that and allow yourself to feel really bloody proud of yourself.
Some inspiration for you:
- A fitness challenge – think couch to 5k or attending a class you’ve been too scared to try
- Learning something new – always wanted to be able to knit? Speak french? Paint?
- Finance goal – to set aside a certain amount or maybe learn how to invest & pull your head out of the sand
- Plan a trip – somewhere you’ve always wanted to go? Start making it happen
- Strengthen your relationships – plan dates with friends, date nights, family days out & get some real quality time in with your loved ones.

3. Romanticise the Shi*t Out of Spring
We are all very quick to romanticise alcohol. Candlelit glasses of red, sunset cocktails, sophisticated glasses of wine with friends. But the reality is seldom like that, because the more we drink, the more we want. And, ain’t nothing sophisticated about making yourself sick so you can stay out and drink more, believe me.
So let’s flip the script. Let’s romanticise the incoming season change. The long nights, the hot girl walks, the cute AF morning routines, the alcohol free drinks in the sun, the energy you’ll have, the memories you’ll make. I’m talking exploring, trying new places to eat, working your way through the mocktail menu & not numbing your tastebuds with tequila. Authentic experiences, full scale clarity and working on being at peace. All done with a world class AFG&T & no hangover. Just the way we like it.
If you’re struggling to believe that all this is possible without pining for a glass of wine, check out the 31 Day Alcohol Free Transformation to completely change your relationship with alcohol.
4. Start Now (And Don’t Worry About Being Perfect)
If you’re looking to try the alcohol free lifestyle but you’re not ready to commit long-term – that is totally OK! Don’t let it stop you from starting. There will always be some upcoming event in the diary that will keep you from starting if you let it. And if you slip up and have a glass of champagne at a wedding? Well hell, that’s better than showing up already half-cut and making a tit of yourself.
Progress not perfection. You might find a it easy to stay dry during an enjoyable dinner with friends (good conversation, nice ambience, generally relaxing activity), but you might find the bar afterwards absolute hell (too loud to talk, too many people, too small a space). If you don’t try, you won’t learn what you enjoy sober – ie what you ultimately enjoy without needing to numb yourself silly. The more attention you give this, the easier it gets to spend your time in a way that genuinely makes you happy.
Spring Forward
The clocks are about to change and with that, a new season will be ushered in. Try not to get too caught up thinking about how you want to be able to enjoy a glass of rose in the garden or an ice cold pint of cider at the pub. The alcohol free alternatives are pretty damn good these days (you can check them out here and here). But thinking like that? It’ll keep you stuck exactly where you are. Because before you know it, it will be mulled wine season again (or pumpkin spice season as I have reframed it). So take the reins on the rest of your year. Decide who you want to be by December – and go make it happen.
If you’re ready to make a change, quit alcohol and reclaim your time, energy and health, there’s really no better time than the present! Not sure how to get started?
